One of the outdoor Activities for The Eastern Townships is the Memphrémagog swimming marathon |
Each year, there is the international swimming competition beginning in Magog on Lake Memphremagog. This marathon features the long distance swimmers from around the world. The race is (40km) 24 miles long from Magog to Newport, Vermont. Many cultural and sports activities for the whole family surround this event. It takes place from July 15 to July 20th. Lake Memphremagog is a long 24 mile 4333 feet (39.98km) and narrow lake straddling the US and Canada Scenic Canadian mountains and the US countryside of northern Vermont surround it. At its southernmost point is Newport Vt., a quaint, typical New England town, and at its opposite end is Magog, Canada, a bustling, French Canadian resort town. Scuba Diving in Lake Memphremagog is a great spot. The visibility is considered good and there are shallow areas to dive. The lake is teaming with several species of fish, including bass, trout and pike. Paul Crepeau, president of Les Diables des Mers, recommends diving at this site at night when there are fewer fishermen and less boat traffic. The fish also become friskier at night, he says, and often allow divers to pet and play with them. "They probably think we're fish just like them," Crepeau said with a laugh. If you do go night diving, you'll need a dive light to help you navigate your way through the dark waters. |
