On April 19, 1901 a catastrophe hits the Town. "The Big Fire of Magog". The fire that originated in the basement of City Hall that burns along with ten houses and businesses.
This early 19th Century Quebec chartered bank note from Sherbrooke has a beautiful portrait of Queen Victoria as well as vignettes of an Indian and the Magog River Falls.

Merry South & Hatley Streets
Many of the town of Magog's significant historical sites and houses can be discovered as we invite you to walk along this designated path. The documental stops along the way were chosen for either their historical meaning or for their particular architectural style, where they stand today as an integral part of our heritage.
(MERRY SOUTH & HATLEY STREETS  around 1895 Magog)

Around 1860 most of Magog's social activities were centered at the intersection of Merry
South and Hatley Streets. Located in this area, were the Protestant Church, hotels and a few shops. Catholics gradually moved away from this center, first by building a chapel on Merry North, where the Community Center is now located. The Hatley Street area was largely built up with residences, many of which had barns to keep their horses and sometimes other livestock. Obviously this picture was taken from a veranda at the Park House Hotel, which burned down in 1905. History records show, that people of Magog went all out to celebrate Dominion Day (now Canada Day) and it is likely the structure shown bottom left was either a bandstand or saluting base for a parade. In top centre we can see Magog Presbyteian Church Steeple.

1914 - 1918 War memorial, erected in the "Parc des Braves" in 1922 on Main Street, Magog

The very first passenger ship on the lake was called the HO-Boy, built in 1822, which carried horses and
passengers from the east to the west side of the lake. The most remembered passenger ship was the Lady of the Lake, built and launched in 1867. Stretching over 152 feet in lenght, it could hold up to 1,200 passengers and was in operation until 1948. This giant ship was so loved by area residents that its likeness was incorporated into Newport, Vermont's City Seal.
This is Ralph Merry's House, one of the oldest houses in Magog - It is situated at the corner of Main and Merry Streets. It was, until recently, occupied by descendants of the Merry Family. (Built in 1821)
